As we get closer to the New Year, even during a pandemic, we can't help but think about our resolutions. And SO often, those goals include weight loss. Wanting to lose weight is a common goal among women especially, but it's often approached in an unhealthy or negative way. There's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to change our bodies, but what we don't realize is that many of us go about it the wrong way. We forget that there is no one size fits all formula, we forget that our bodies are unique and what worked for one person most likely won't work for another. We also tend to jump into our goals too fast and too extreme. We don't take a sustainable approach! And guess what happens midway through January? We give up!
Right now the internet is flooding us with reasons to buy their quick fix programs, to do this diet, to "start fresh", and to find the "new you". Well I say F**k that! Seriously, take a moment and STOP yourself before you click 'buy now'. Is it REALLY going to do what it promises? Highly unlikely! Is it something that you can stick with longterm? Again, very unlikely. Exercise actually has VERY little to do with weight loss. What we eat, how we sleep, and what stage of life we're in, are more important factors. Don't ruin the amazing benefits that movement can have by clouding it with unrealistic weight loss expectations.
Here's what I want you to do. Stop thinking about exercise as an ultimate means to weight loss. Change your relationship to exercise and do it for more fulfilling and satisfying reasons. Exercise can help with stress, depression, and anxiety. It increases energy, cognitive function, and improves the strength of our cardiovascular system. It helps to reduce our risk of injury, can decrease joint pain, and improve bone density. Exercise gives us confidence, improves our self esteem, and provides us a healthy outlet for whatever life throws our way (ummm, like a pandemic!!)...
Don't those sound like amazing reasons to lift weights and move our bodies? They're most definitely the reasons why I keep moving forward, getting into the gym, on my yoga mat, or out for a walk, hike, or run.
So what do you do instead? Find a program/coach that doesn't promise you the moon, the stars, and the 6 pack abs. Because if they do, they're LYING! There is NO way anyone can guarantee to help you shed X amount of weight or look a certain way. It just isn't possible!
If you want a fresh perspective without the bullshit, feel free to check out my membership! I promise you it is NOT a 28 day fix, it's not about weight loss, it's not a magic recipe, it's not the promise land of svelte bodies and rippling muscles. But it IS a place to learn smart movement that will hopefully keep you inspired, strong, happy, and energized. It's a place where women can learn how to move from their core, how to progressively work with kettlebells, increase their strength, and improve their flexibility.
